Story Overview

In Stern Bild City, superheroes are corporate-sponsored celebrities competing for points on the Hero TV reality show. Wild Tiger is an old-fashioned hero who prioritizes saving lives over good ratings; Barnaby Brooks Jr. is a rising star focused on fame and revenge for his parents' murder. When their companies merge, they're forced to work as a hero duo despite their fundamental differences. Their partnership evolves from forced professionalism to genuine friendship as they uncover a conspiracy behind Barnaby's past.

Characters

Kotetsu 'Wild Tiger' Kaburagi is a middle-aged dad trying to balance hero work with his relationship with his daughter — his earnest, old-fashioned heroism is both funny and genuinely touching. Barnaby is cool and competent but closed off, his emotional walls slowly crumbling through his partnership with Kotetsu. Their dynamic drives everything.

Art Style

Mizuki Sakakibara's art adapts the anime's character designs faithfully while adding its own energy. Action sequences are dynamic, and the humor lands visually as well as textually. The hero suit designs carry over from the anime's distinctive look.

Cultural Context

Tiger & Bunny satirizes both superhero media and corporate branding — each hero's suit features real (fictional) sponsor logos, sending up the commercialization of everything. It reflects Japanese ambivalence about American superhero culture filtered through a uniquely Japanese workplace drama sensibility.

What I Love About It

What got me about Tiger & Bunny was how much it cares about its middle-aged protagonist. Kotetsu isn't a young hero at the beginning of his career — he's a father, struggling with age-diminishing powers, trying to be present for his daughter while also saving lives. That specificity makes him three-dimensional in ways younger protagonists often aren't.

What English-Speaking Fans Say

Tiger & Bunny has a devoted international fanbase that grew with the anime and extended to the manga. The manga is praised for capturing the charm of the anime while providing a different visual experience. Kotetsu and Barnaby's relationship is cited as one of the most satisfying partnerships in recent action media.

Memorable Scene ⚠️ Spoiler Warning

Spoiler Warning: The moment when Barnaby realizes that the father figure he's grown to trust might be connected to his parents' murder — and Kotetsu's reaction to protecting his partner — is the emotional peak of the series.
