Story Overview
Kaoruko Mochizuki has been raised by her mother, who never explained her unusual background. When her mother dies, she inherits a flower shop — and discovers that she's a half-witch whose powers are uncontrolled and dangerous.
Kagari Sudo appears. He's a Knightguard Witch Hunter — an organization that manages magical individuals. He's assigned to contain Kaoruko's powers while she learns to control them.
Their relationship develops under the tension of his assigned role and their mutual attraction.
Characters
Kaoruko Mochizuki — Her discovery of her witch heritage reorganizes her understanding of her life; her relationship with her mother's choices becomes part of the series' content.
Kagari Sudo — His guardian role creates structural distance between them; the tension of assignment-versus-feeling is the series' romance engine.
Art Style
Ohmi's art is clean and sensual — the magical sequences are rendered with appropriate visual drama, and the character designs fit the series' mature-register tone.
Cultural Context
Spell of Desire ran in Cheese! — Shogakukan's josei-adjacent shojo magazine known for romance with more sensual content than standard shojo publications. The witch-guardian premise draws on magical romance conventions while the magazine placement allows slightly more mature development.
What I Love About It
The flower shop setting. Kaoruko's connection to the physical world of flowers — which connects to her magical powers — gives the supernatural content a grounded sensory anchor that most witch romance manga don't have.
What English-Speaking Fans Say
Western readers describe Spell of Desire as a reliably enjoyable supernatural romance — specifically noted for the art being appealing, for the witch-discovery premise being a well-executed version of the genre, and for the short five-volume length being appropriate for the premise's scope.
Memorable Scene ⚠️ Spoiler Warning
The first time Kaoruko's powers manifest with specific intent rather than uncontrolled accident — when her witchcraft becomes something she's beginning to understand rather than just to fear — is the series' key power development moment.
