Story Overview
Shirayuki is an herbalist in the kingdom of Tanbarun. Her red hair — unusual and striking — attracts the attention of Prince Raji, who wants her as a concubine. She refuses. She cuts her hair and leaves it for him as a farewell message. She flees.
In the neighboring kingdom of Clarines, she meets Zen — a prince who helps her without demanding anything. She decides to stay, not because of Zen, but because she wants to become a court herbalist in Clarines.
The romance develops alongside her professional ambitions — neither diminishing the other.
Characters
Shirayuki — Her goals are specific and her pursuit of them is active; she doesn't wait for the romance to resolve her professional life or the professional life to enable the romance.
Zen — His respect for Shirayuki's independence is genuine; he wants to be alongside her, not in front of her; this makes him unusual as a fantasy prince romantic lead.
Art Style
Akizuki's art is warm and detailed — the herbalist work and court settings are rendered with specificity, and Shirayuki's expressions of determination and joy are consistently conveyed.
Cultural Context
Snow White with the Red Hair ran in LaLa from 2006-2022. The title references the fairy tale but the story is not a retelling — the red hair is the connection. The herbalism content is depicted with genuine attention to period-appropriate botanical practice.
What I Love About It
Zen learning Shirayuki's work. He doesn't just respect that she has goals — he makes effort to understand what those goals involve. The romance is built through mutual understanding of what each person actually does and cares about.
What English-Speaking Fans Say
Western readers describe Snow White with the Red Hair as the best fantasy romance manga in English — specifically noted for Shirayuki's professional ambitions being as central as the romance, for Zen being the most respectful romantic lead in the genre, and for the 25-volume run being consistently excellent. The anime adaptation is also frequently praised.
Memorable Scene ⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Shirayuki's first successful performance of her herbalist work at court — when her professional goal becomes real rather than aspirational — is the series' most important non-romantic moment.
