Quick Take

  • The "bugs as psychological manifestation" concept is genuinely creative — cleaning becomes a metaphor for trauma processing with enough specificity to be interesting
  • The supernatural premise distinguishes this from standard shojo romance effectively
  • 3 volumes complete; a short series that sets up the longer sequel Queens' Quality

Story Overview

Fumi Nishioka is homeless, more or less, and deals with this by keeping every space she occupies perfectly clean. When she encounters Kyutaro Horikita and his grandmother, she gets a place to stay in exchange for cleaning their large and apparently haunted house.

Kyutaro is a "Sweeper" — someone who enters the mental spaces of people infected by psychological bugs, manifestations of trauma and negativity that take on physical form in the mind's landscape. He fights these bugs and cleans the psychological residue they leave.

Fumi's own unusual ability — her genuine love for cleaning and her intuitive relationship with spaces — turns out to be relevant to this work. The series follows her training as a potential Sweeper alongside her developing relationship with Kyutaro.

Characters

Fumi Nishioka — A protagonist whose surface cheerfulness and deep cleaning compulsion have a backstory that the series' later development (in Queens' Quality) explores fully; in this shorter series, she is mostly competence and warmth.

Kyutaro Horikita — A character whose gruffness and seriousness about his work make him a distinct Motomi love interest type.

Art Style

Motomi's art is clean and expressive — the psychological spaces that Sweepers enter are depicted with creative monster design, and the normal-world scenes have the expressive character work typical of her style.

Cultural Context

QQ Sweeper ran in Bessatsu Shōjo Comic from 2013 to 2014. The cleaning-as-psychological-work metaphor draws from Japanese concepts of spiritual pollution and purification, placing the supernatural premise within a cultural framework that gives it grounding.

What I Love About It

The premise's specificity. "Psychological bugs" as the manifestation of trauma and negative emotion is not a generic supernatural premise — it has a specific visual logic where the nature of the bug reflects the nature of the psychological issue. This attention to the premise's internal logic is Motomi's characteristic strength.

What English-Speaking Fans Say

Western readers describe QQ Sweeper as a strong short setup for Queens' Quality — specifically noted for the premise being more interesting than most shojo supernatural setups, for Fumi's character having more interiority than initial volumes suggest, and for Motomi's art being consistently strong. Recommended as an entry point to the two-series story.

Memorable Scene ⚠️ Spoiler Warning

The first time Fumi enters a psychological space and demonstrates her unusual ability — the moment when her cleaning instinct becomes relevant to the supernatural work — is the series' most effective premise-payoff moment.
