Quick Take

  • Key's most action-focused work — the supernatural faction conflict gives the series energy the slice-of-life Key properties don't have
  • The environmental themes and the city of Kazamatsuri are the most distinctive worldbuilding Key has done
  • 6 volumes complete; works as action fantasy for readers not invested in the visual novel

Story Overview

Kotarou Tennouji can rewrite his body — augment his strength, sharpen his senses, alter himself — but each use consumes some of his remaining lifespan. In Kazamatsuri, an unusual city committed to coexisting with nature, he encounters two organizations: Guardian, which protects humanity from supernatural threats, and Gaia, which believes humanity needs to give way to something older.

The series follows Kotarou through his encounters with both factions and the girls connected to each, moving toward the conflict that will decide the city's — and possibly humanity's — future.

Characters

Kotarou Tennouji — More action-capable than typical Key protagonists; his ability and its cost create a different moral framework than Riki or Otonashi.

Kotori Kanbe — Kotarou's childhood friend who knows more about the city's secrets than she reveals; her route is the series' most affecting.

Art Style

Sukeno's art (the creator of Good Luck Girl) is energetic and action-capable — the supernatural combat sequences are clear and dynamic.

Cultural Context

Rewrite was Key's seventh visual novel (2011). The manga adaptation by Yoshiaki Sukeno covers the main routes in compressed form. The 2016 anime is another adaptation option.

What I Love About It

Kazamatsuri. A city whose policy is to exist in genuine coexistence with the natural world — where urban development is balanced against preservation — is an interesting setting for a conflict about humanity's relationship to the planet.

What English-Speaking Fans Say

Western readers describe Rewrite as Key's most action-satisfying work — specifically noted for the faction conflict being energetic, for Kotarou being a more capable protagonist than Key's usual type, and for the environmental themes being more interesting than typical anime apocalypse setups. Recommended for Key fans who wanted more action.

Memorable Scene ⚠️ Spoiler Warning

The sequence where Kotarou must choose between Guardian and Gaia — when the factions' actual motivations are clear and the choice is genuinely difficult — is the series' best action-meets-moral-weight scene.
